Bergamo’s Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
If you have time for only one stop in Bergamo, it should be the Basilica. Built in the 12th century, it retains its Romanesque external internal structure, although it’s unusual polychromatic facade was added later. It has undergone a number of modifications and embellishments over the centuries, and its attractions are too many to mention here. The baroque interior is especially astonishing, with seemingly every square inch filled with tapestries, paintings and carved figures. It is almost too much to take in - every direction you look holds a new attraction.
