Voices from the island (4)
"We call them Mafia Cubans. They're the ones over in Miami who want to come back here and look around and say 'I claim that hotel' or 'that factory' or 'that farm' because that's where their grandparents used to live 50 years ago. They dream of coming back and driving about in big flashy cars, with gold hanging off them. They dream of driving through their family's old neighbourhoods to flaunt how successful they are, what big shots they are.
"There is something in the Cuban character that is like that. You, a European, if you had a good car, any car, you could pick up any Cuban girl and have sex with her, whatever your age, because she'd like to be seen being driven around in a smart car.
"But the Revolution happened for a reason. It got rid of those people. The Revolution was popular and you won't find many people here who wish it had never happened. And you'll find even fewer people who want the Mafia Cubans to come over and try to turn things back the way they used to be."
Luanis, Vinales
