We took a walk down to the ferry terminal to confirm where the Krilo ferry would be docked in the morning. Terminal 10 was the Split to Dubrovnik ferry. -- Split, Crioatia
That is a yacht behind MA - I think the Athena, from Split - with the various ferry docks that ply the waters connecting mainland ports to many island ports. -- Split, Croatia
What woud a city be without the letters spelling out its name in a pretty spot and the tourists who must capture this unique experience. -- Split, Croatia
One of the gates to Diocletian's Palace. The equipment was for a film production of some sort that was blocking some of the interior of the palace. -- Split, Croatia
Gregory of Nin, standing just outside of Diocletian's Palace. He introduced Croatian into the church. As someone stated, it looks like he is scrolling along on his tablet -- Split, Croatia
Within the walls of Diocletian's Palace as a film crew and actors rest between scenes. It was obvious that some actors were only to be viewed from the mid torso upwards - they had running shoes on instead of the period boots other had on. -- Split, Croatia
Typical of the markets around here, stalls with all sorts of honeys, liqueurs, brandies, jams, truffles, olive oils. Samples were delicious. -- Split, Croatia
A different view of the Split train station (trains to Zagreb) as we wandered a new-to-us part of the city just down the hill from our apartment. -- Split, Croatia
WITH yesterday being such a whirlwind of 'getting somewhere' seemingly forever, it was nice not to have to do so. I didn't set an alarm but just hoped I'd awake before the day was over... at 758 am my eyes popped open.
First to get done was to finish putting the bikes together. In case that anything was wrong I could sort it out befor we need the bikes tomorrow. Assembly went surprisingly well and much more quickly than last summer when Alex and I went to Portugal. I guess I remember a thing or two about these bikes. They look similar but the assembly methods for the two of them is very different.
Bikes assembled it was time to wander into town to find some food and some lattes. Beside one of the gates into Diocletian's Palace we found a fruit/veggie market, a pastry shop and a cafe all in the same area. We had our lattes at the cafe then took our fruit and pastries down to the promenade along the water where we gobbled down most of our juicy strawberries. They are locally grown in Makarska which is just down the coast a wee bit.
Then we just wandered sometimes along the water, and sometimes through the back streets of the old city and eventually into Diocletian's Palace. It was pretty busy though the tourist season is 'quiet' at the moment. I can't imagine what it would be like in high season.
A cool moment was seeing a film production crew and group of actors in what seemed like old Venetian costume (much of Dalmatia was once Venentian). Unfortunately, it meant that parts of the palace were blocked from view as well.
Starting to get a bit tired, we returned to our apartment where we sampled the cherry liqueur that our hostess had gifted to us - delicious. I lay down for just a minute but have to admit that I may have dozed off for a moment or two.
Not hungry for supper yet, we wanted to explore some more so headed down to the water to a beach that the hostess had suggested seeing then walked toward the train station and into back streets. En route we went in to a few grocery stores just to see what they are like and to check out the local selection of Milka bars. I had had a strawberry one earlier in the day, so had to scout out future options.
We wanted a drink and possibly a snack so we stopped at a little bar we had seen earlier - The Senna (as in the F1 driver). On the patio were a few swings which was unique. I had a Karlovačko beer and MA had Pelješac wine.
We gradually made our way back toward our apartment but now we were hungry so decided to try one of the nearby restaurants that our hostess had suggested - Plan B Restaurant. It was only a few hundred metres away and though it was big and loud, the ratings were quite good. We ordered a 40 cm maragarita pizza but shortly thereafter along came someone with a one-metre pizza of some other kind. When we said we had not ordered that pizza and it must be someone else's they said no, they had made a mistake. Not wanting them to dispose of it we suggested they simply cut it in half which they finally agreed to do. It was ok, though not great. When they brought the bill, it only had MA's wine on it. When we argued that we had to pay, they said no, a mstake had been made and their policy was the customer did not have to pay. They would not lt us pay for the pizza. So I gave him a very big tip.
