The Equipment Bottom Line
With all the doodads described in the previous page, one could excpect our total load to be quite heavy. Indeed, it is, but we think this is to be expected with full camping and cooking gear, plus winter weight clothing and rain gear.
We did some sessions of kicking stuff out of the bags, but most eventually got back in. We think there is a basic set of things that are sensible to bring, and their weight is whatever it is, so we have given up worrying about it.
That said, it seems I have 51 pounds to carry, including 13 pounds of food, and the weight of the bags, but excluding water and stuff bolted to the bike, like the racks. Dodie has 42 1/2 pounds.
Here is some of the breakdown:
Steve and Dodie clothes, about 6 pounds each. Handlebar bag - Steve (tablet, other electronics, wallet, snacks) 6 1/2 pounds Handlebar bag - Dodie (wallet, toiletries, snacks) 6 1/2 pounds
Tent (including ground sheets and of course the bag weight) 10 pounds Cooking supplies 4 pounds First aid 2 1/2 pounds Bike tools and repair 3 1/2 pounds Duffel bags for train 10 1/2 pounds Underseat bags with rain booties and gloves 1 pound each
