Day 3: Mechanicsville to Mineral: Baby hills begin
5:32:11. 10.1 avg
today was a good day of riding. We'd been invited to breakfast with the ministry at 6:30, but I'd waken up with the birds at 4:45, so I got there a little early. Howard was getting things ready for his family for breakfast, helping them have a somewhat normal life. He had all their cereal bowls laid out and filled up waiting for his wife and three kids to get finished with their morning rituals. He asked me to join them and then served me breakfast, too. Every time I tried to stand up to get something, he hopped up and took care of it for me. His youngest daughter wanted her picture taken, so we did a couple of pictures and I signed her autograph book.
Then everyone from the shelter packed things into their family's tote bins, packed up the vans, and headed out.

We'd had a really heavy dew and piddled around waiting for the sun to come dry everything before we broke camp. Brian headed back toward Jamestown, and we were off through Ashland and Bumpass to Mineral, our destination for the night.

The roads went through slightly rolling territory, enough to make my legs sore and enough time in the saddle to provide some posterior discomfort, but we made it to Mineral's Fire Station by 5:00. I think the hills surprised Cristey, but we'll have a lot more of those soon. We ate dinner in Mineral, chatted with the fire chief, and crashed for the night.
Today's ride: 56 miles (90 km)
Total: 149 miles (240 km)
