The Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria
Four days before we launch the bikes
The Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria is a 545 kilometre route in Calabria crossing the Pollino and Sila National Parks, the Serre Regional Natural Park and the Aspromonte National Park. We’ll start at Scalea, which lies below Naples on the Tyrrhenian Sea and cycle up into the mountains to join the trail near the official starting point of Laino Borgo. From there it’s southward bound until we reach the southern tip of mainland Italy at Reggio Calabria. In the remaining week we’ll jump on a train up to to Policoro on the ‘heel of Italy’ and cycle towards Rome. We’ll ride as far as we can before we run out of time and then jump onto a train back to Rome.

My good mate Rob will join me for his first proper bike touring experience and in the final week my long suffering Watford supporting English buddy Franklin will hopefully join us for the ride towards Rome. This should significantly raise the odds of us staying on course as Rob’s directional sense is only marginally better than mine.
