I had hoped that my downstairs neighbors' departure at Guilin North Station at about 9:30pm would mean that I could move down to a lower bunk but someone new got on board at the same station.
I had also hoped that my buying a ticket only as far as Zhanjiang West Station would mean that I could stay on the train all the way to Haikou and just pay extra when I arrived. However, although I swear that the train I bought tickets on was the same number as the one going all the way down to Sanya, just without sleeper berths available the whole way, we were all woken up at 5am to be kicked off at the terminal station.
Along with three random men who seemed to already know each other and who were in the process of negotiating a ride with a tout when I emerged from the station, I caught a taxi to Xuwen with a driver that was remarkably resistant to the idea of any kind of lengthy delay (such as "stopping for breakfast").

Reserving a more attractively priced and reviewed hotel than the across the street from the coach station hotel she tried to drop me off at on account of the ferry across the straits being closed for inclement weather, my various demands over the course of the trip must have added as much as 3 or even 4 kilometers to our 160km journey, and it wasn't exactly like she was going to find much in the way of travelers heading back north until it opened late that afternoon, so I really don't know what her problem was.
Checked in via the "she called the police and that's definitively what they wanted" photo of the foreigner in the lobby method of registration, went upstairs, took a luxurious hot shower and passed out.
Today's ride: 1 km (1 miles)
Total: 1,729 km (1,074 miles)
