Today is the annual celebration of Confucius's birthday.

Today is the annual celebration of Confucius's birthday. I'm literally next door to the Confucius Temple, and—on account of my translating it for them—I have a copy of the script being used in Qufu at the Grand Ceremony that's currently being broadcast all over the world.

So, of course, I needed to visit the Temple; and, of course, I needed to make a video about me visiting the Temple; and I needed to pick a very solemn rendition of Happy Birthday played on traditional Chinese instruments as the background music.

今天是一年一度庆祝孔子诞辰的日子。

在这个重要的日子，我就住在孔庙隔壁，而且——因为我给他们做翻译——我有一份正在全球直播的曲阜大典所用的脚本。

所以，我当然得去参观孔庙；我还得拍个参观孔庙的视频；而且我会选一首用中国传统乐器演奏的庄严肃穆版的《生日快乐》作为背景音乐。

Even knowing that completely modern things also get zero maintenance until they need replacing, it still infuriates me to see wood in this condition 即便知道完全现代化的东西在更换之前也常常无人维护，但看到木头变成这样还是让我很生气。

Knowing what the potential lodging situation is like in all the directions ahead of me (to the extent that I've even called the one hotel with a listed phone number), I'm annoyed with myself over how much time I spend at the Temple. I really don't want another night ride but all of this "enjoying myself" is chipping away at a limited amount of daylight.

By the time I'm eating lunch outside the Temple and being thoroughly charmed by the aunties who have never seen or interacted with a foreigner and who are just so gosh darn excited by me, the sky has begun to look ominous enough that I actually check the weather report.

我知道前方各地都有潜在的住宿问题（我甚至给一家有电话号码的酒店打过电话），但我在孔庙花了这么多时间，心里有点懊恼。我真的不想再摸黑骑行了，但我这尽情“享受”的行为正在耗费有限的白天时间。

等我在孔庙外吃午饭，被那些从未见过外国人、也没和外国人打过交道，看到我兴奋得不得了的阿姨们逗乐时，天空已经开始变得阴沉，我还查看了天气预报。

There were just few enough of them and they were so smiley about it that it was charming. 人不是很多，而且她们笑得那么开心，真的挺好玩。

No rain forecast for today, but tomorrow is expected to pour. With cold rain and heavy winds predicted, I take another look at the limited information about the most likely hotel (singular) on the west route where the pass over the mountains isn't quite as high as to the north, and it's not that long before I'm deciding that staying in Dai is the best way to do things.

By the time I've made it to the next hotel, inspected the beds and found them appropriately squishy, and gotten checked in, I'm sufficiently feeling the need for a nap that I fall asleep fully clothed on top of the blankets. And despite tossing, turning, and just generally feeling really cold, I won't manage to wake myself up and get a spare blanket or turn the heat on until after the fever I didn't know I had has broken.

天气预报说今天没雨，但明天预计会下大雨。预报有冷雨和大风，我又看了看西线最有可能入住的那家酒店（仅此一家）的有限信息，西线翻山的路段没有北线那么高，没过多久我就决定留在代县是最好的安排。

等我到了下一家酒店，检查了床铺，觉得够软，办理好入住手续后，我已经困得不行，穿着衣服就直接倒在毯子上睡着了。尽管我翻来覆去，感觉特别冷，但直到我不知道什么时候退烧了，我才醒过来去拿条备用毯子或者打开暖气。

One of my nutso bonzai friends that likes winter so much that she goes ice swimming says my 12 hours asleep plus the amount I'll sleep the next day sounds like I may have been recovering from a mild case of hypothermia.

Whatever the specific problem was, I definitely had a mild fever and I definitely slept enough that the guesthouse owner was starting to be a bit concerned over me, so today is marked as a (S)ick Day.

我有个疯狂热爱冬天，甚至会去冬泳的朋友说，我睡了12个小时，再加上第二天睡的时间，我可能是在从轻度体温过低中恢复过来了。

不管具体情况如何，我肯定是发了低烧，而且我睡觉的时间长得连民宿老板都开始有点担心我了，所以今天就记为生病日吧。

On the one hand, this historic stele looks like it's gone through an acid bath 一方面，这块历史石碑看起来像是经历过酸雨

On the other hand, this modern one is in sufficiently poor condition, it's probably a problem with the local rock 另一方面，这座现代石碑的状况也相当糟糕，可能是当地石材的问题
