The State of Jefferson loop starts and finishes in Cave Junction.
Going southwest, the route crosses a gap between the Klamath and Siskiyou mountains, then descends the Smith river to the Pacific Ocean at Crescent City.
South of Crescent City the route climbs into giant Redwoods, then follows the coast down to Arcata.
Going inland, the route crosses two passes in the Coast range to get to Willow Creek.
Then north along the Trinity and Klamath rivers to Happy Camp, through three Indigenous Peoples' homelands.
Then a final big climb up to 4767 feet (1445 m) to cross the Siskiyou range, followed by a big descent to Cave Junction.
