Semur to Avallon: A chateau and unforgettable countryside

Susan is staying in the same hotel as Janos and I, and since this is our last cycling day together we need some special shots for the album.

Setting out for our last ride together, on this tour anyway

We meet Rachael and Scott in front of the church and it's time to set up another last-day photo, the last day that the five of us cycle together in Burgundy.

This is also my last chance to get some pictures of the interior of Notre-Dame.

Finally we are on our way. The first eight kilometers are on a road that doesn't invite to dawdle. It isn't dangerous, just a lot of cars whizzing along, not the peaceful kind of country road we are used to and we don't stop until we reach Époisses.

A last look at Semur

It's good to be off the busy road and we veer off the set route for a walk around the Chateau d'Époisses, at one time a medieval fortress.

Who's going to watch the bikes?

The highlight of the day was the sweeping views that rewarded our climbs. They were well worth the effort and a blue sky with billowing clouds were the icing on the cake so to speak. And now for lots of pictures, perhaps a bit repetitious, and no captions.

When picnic time came, Scott promptly found us a quiet spot with rustic stone benches.

We're hungry, Scott, find us a place where we can eat our sandwiches.

Once in Avallon we squeezed into our tiny room, went out again for a walk and some shopping and then met the others for an opulent dinner, our farwell dinner with Susan. Despite rather much food and our minimal room, I slept well.

No more pictures for the day!
