Wisdom in Winona
Popped into the tiny post office in Winona yesterday. Thomas was just closing up. Thomas is the young man who recently became a father. When he found out what I was doing, he dropped a lot of wisdom on me regarding the ride, e.g.:
"You're only as old as you feel." (Response to my noting that I'm not getting younger.)
"You only live once."
"Why not?"
"You're practically there [San Francisco], and from here on it's pretty flat...except for the Rockies." (Granted, Thomas was clearly messing with me.)
Sometimes cliches are cliche for a reason.
Anyway, seriously, I've appreciated the well-wishes from my old friends as well as the acquaintances I've made along the way. I was telling my wife the other day that I never thought of myself as someone who needed a lot of cheerleading, back-patting, etc. (except of course, from her). It turns out encouraging words are indeed encouraging.
