From day and mile one, the name Dwight D. Eisenhower kept appearing.  

There he is as a lieutenant colonel on the first transcontinental military motor convoy across the Lincoln Highway in 1919.  The convoy left from the stone marker pictured above.

My first lodging on this journey was in the Eisenhower Hotel and Conference Center, just south of Gettysburg.

My old friend Scott, one of the sponsors of this ride, drove Lucille and I through the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado.  The subject line of my History Facts feed last week was, "What was Dwight D. Eisenhower's middle name?" 

Eisenhower was a republican.  During his two terms as president, from 1953 to 1961, the top marginal income tax rate was over 90%.  Today the top rate is under 40%.  Corporate tax rates were also much higher and less easy to escape through loopholes.  

Life certainly was not perfect for all Americans, but infrastructure was developed, and gaps in equity and education were much slimmer.

Ans. The middle initial stood for David, which was actually his first name, but it was also his father's first name, so his mother called him Dwight D.
