In Iepre

We have a day off

At 8pm every evening there is a simple act of remembrance at the Menen Gates.  These have apart from during the world wars been carried out continuously .  The Menen Gates, which are such a marvellous memorial to the British fallen are in the process of being restored and are wrapped in plastic but the ceremonies continue.  Last night there were a group of scouts taking part in it.   Dressed in impeccable uniform  the bugle players marched in and played the reveille , some wreaths were laid, Bunyon’s words were read, the last post was played, then it was over.  The crowd was huge as I am sure it must always be on a nice summers night.  I wonder what it would be like in winter.  We actually could see little but could hear and absorbed the atmosphere.

After that we walked into the main square and like the rest disappeared into one of the many restaurants, for us an Italian one.  Sitting outside it was certainly a very different atmosphere than at the Menen Gates.  There is a huge fun fair in town and all around us terrifying looking rides were in action.  It seemed each one tried to outdo the other in both wildness and noise. Apparently this descends on Iepre for a week each summer

Today was a day of resting and planning.  Apart from venturing out to eat I did little though Ken did do a bit of exploration. We now have sorted out what we will do for the next week
