In Budpest

Getting away is always exciting and we thought we were so well organised going over everything again and again. Puss went out to the cattery. She cried pathetically all the way there but I am sure she will be very happy.

The car went out to the farm as we only have a single garage at the Village.   Looking around at the winter landscape it felt amazing that in somewhat over 24hours we would be in high summer and trying to escape from the heat

Back home all we had to do was wait for our transport. Punctually we were picked up and whisked to the airport everything was going so well until….  The lady at desk asked ‘Have you any charging gear or spare batteries in your check in luggage’. Very snuggly we said ‘No they are all in our carry on’.  The moment of truth. Had we actually put those carefully selected things in Kens carry on?  Frantic search. No they were still at home everything we need for our electronics, adaptors, charger for the camera, the bike lights and their charger, usb cords etc etc etc.  Apart for our phones and ipad all we had was one usb cord to charge phones on the plane.  No Scott I am not trying to go into competition with you.

It’s a testing flight from New Zealand, a bit over 17hours Auckland to Dubai, 5 hours in transit then another 6 hours to Budapest but the flight went well and we were extremely glad to get to our hotel over thirty hours after we left home

Budapest when we arrived was hot, well over 30 degrees but our hotel a cool haven right beside the Danube.  We walked along to a lovely Greek Restaurant. It was packed with families all having what seemed to be very happy and important celebrations.  The Greek salads we had were delicious but our appetites had deserted us

The atmosphere was fantastic

They even gave me a pink rose at the end of the meal. Ken  didn’t part up enjoy carrying it back to the hotel.

A reasonable sleep, breakfast and a walk along the river and we are waiting till the shops open so we can see what we can replace

The photo Ken took of the Chain Bridge so much better than mine

Mission accomplished with little drama.  The dont have Ubers in Budapest so we ordered a taxi and it was a wild ride to the West Mall where Media Mrkt is.  I’m not someone who does malls well, in fact I hate them but it was fun trying to negotiate a Hungarian one.

We found it!

We got excellent help and soon apart from the specific bike things it was all sorted.  As we rather expected the camera charger was a step to far and we will just have to rely on our phones for photos. Actually it was at this point there was a bit of a problem I went to the check out, turned around and Ken had disappeared .  Back to where we had come from, no Ken.  How could he disappear - eventually a smiling Ken arrived with his now buddy the assistant at the camera part.  The guy had taken him out the back and had been ringing around the camera shops in Budapest looking for a solution - no luck.

Time to celebrate

We had thought of hiring bikes but the traffic along the river is hectic and there are road works everywhere so we think we will have a tram ride. We get on the boat tomorrow

Scott AndersonWhat a shame. I can imagine how sick you must have felt when you realized what you’d left behind. What kind of camera do you have though? I wonder if someone could help you find a charger for it nd get it to you somehow.

Tricia GrahamTo Scott AndersonCan’t believe we were such idiots! However things largely fixed now. Getting a charger for the camera really doesn’t seem possible so Ken is reconciled to using his phone. Hopefully all the bike bits and pieces will be replaceable in Bremen. It is so wonderful to be on our way again

Tao He Peter Piper, Good to hear the story and see the smiling photos. Must have been a shocking realization. With persistence if you stop by every 2nd hand and camera shop on the way, you will claw back the remaining charger to right the wrong.

Carolyn van HoeveSo glad to read you’re there, though sorry for the fright at finding you’d left all the chargers behind. But happily easily replaceable items! It’s still raining every day here. You’re in the right place!

Robyn RichardsTricia, your airport realization is my personal worst nightmare. Despite being SO careful with chargers beforehand, it's so easy to just walk out of the house without them! Looking forward to following along.
