What we Thought of the Romantische Strasse
The towns that have banded together under the banner of the Romantische Strasse include some that really are a treat to visit. They may have intact altstadt walls, beautiful and interesting buildings, and lots of historical interest. On the other hand some are pretty plain, and some - notably Dinkelsbuhl - are wearing too much makeup and feel false.
The radweg itself is by and large well signed and includes some really pleasant riding. There is enough on-road stuff, though, to make this not the one to take kids on.
South of Donauworth there is not much in terms of great towns, and the route seems to wander into more hills than necessary. The Via Claudia Augusta radweg is a more direct and better alternative, we think, for getting south to Fussen.
Romantische Strasse pros:
Great theme
Many interesting towns
Well marked
Many kms of nice pathway
Romantische cons:
Route may wander to pick up not so intresting towns - like Rain
More hills than necessary?
On road sections
Sections where camping is scarce
