Day 2: Birdwood (Mt Pleasant) to Tanunda

In Mt Crawford Forest. The pair of cyclists approaching were the first of a half dozen groups of cyclists (pairs, a trio and a quartet) I encountered between Adelaide and Melrose, all of whom were cycling the full Mawson Trail from north to south. It makes sense to cycle in a southerly direction in spring because of the benefit of more tailwind. In planning my trip I wasn't concerned about being slowed up a bit by wind. As a scenery addict my motivation was to see more stunning views near the end of the ride when in the Flinders Ranges.

This relatively short (50km) route led from Mount Pleasant to Birdwood, then up to Rowland Flat and Tununda, in the heart of the Barossa Valley wine district
