Day 65-71: Windhoek
We had a few things to buy and calories to consume (including birthday cake) to make up for some we’d lost. Probably didn’t really need three rest days. But we (perhaps stupidly) found a parkrun on Saturday morning and ended up with sore legs for the rest of the day (that’s what you get if you haven’t run in weeks!). Windhoek is at 1600m a.s.l – not particularly high but takes some of the breath away. It is still hot here during the day (unseasonably hot we’re told). It feels like we have enough altitude that it should be cooler.

Found a Christmas market in the city centre on Friday night. It’s fun to have a road closed, music playing and street food.
Gave the bikes a clean and a service. Nothing too important has bounced off on the dirt roads. Looks like they’ll be able to continue.
Cath did some investigation and noticed that the heat wave that we were experiencing in Windhoek was even worse in Botswana. Multiple days of over 41degC in a row - and worse – not cooling below mid 30s overnight. We looked around and decided to take a seaside holiday for a few days (it’s much cooler on the Atlantic coast). Instead of jumping on the bikes, we parked them up in the hotel in Windhoek and jumped on a bus to Swakopmund. 5 hours later it was indeed much cooler (luckily, as we had a bit of a walk from the bus drop-off to the accommodation).
A couple of days of doing not much. We did catch up with Johannes and Helena again (they're still heading up the West coast if Africa) and again bumped into another Johannes who we'd also bumped into in Windhoek. Doing nothing was interspersed with a fair bit of chatting about bike trips with this lot.
Heading east toward Botswana tomorrow!
Today's ride: 10 km (6 miles)
Total: 3,121 km (1,938 miles)
