Day 191-196: Kampala – Fort Portal
Even though we ran out of time to go all the way round, we still wanted to head out to Western Uganda. We took the main road from Kampala to Fort Portal. The Chinese road crews have been here as well. The first section, maybe 100km, was smooth and new road. Once we’d left the chaos of Kampala (the Kampala Kaos?), it made for pretty nice cycling over rolling hills. Past this, the road turned to a pot holed disaster for a reasonable stretch, then back to a very well made (Chinese) road for the roughly 100km into Fort Portal. Lots of undulations the whole way which made the scenery more interesting, but it felt like a bit of a slog through a lot of the same. Significantly different scenery for the last ~40km. In the west there are endless tea plantations and a short section of wild jungle (not surprising we didn’t see any chimps or elephant – the road is too noisy for them to rest by the road). We have started to see other types of monkeys in the trees by the side of the road, no baboons, just monkeys.

We rode through Palm Sunday. Most people we saw was carrying or had stuck to their motorbike or car an offcut from a palm tree. Easier to take this literally when palm trees grow by the road.
The blog tally is a bit short, but one of the bike computers rolled over 10,000 km on this section (and disappointingly went to zero rather than 10,000 - should have spent more on the bike computer). A bit further than we initially planned to ride in Africa. About as far as a Cairo to Cape Town trip might take, except now that route is hard with the challenges in Sudan.
