Puy de Sancy
We stayed in Besse a second night to allow time for a hike in the nearby mountains. We took half-board and enjoyed a delicious evening meal - bread, salad, steak, delicious beans, a cheese plate, and creme caramel dessert. And we slept like logs.
We awoke today moments before 8 and quickly made our way downstairs for breakfast. After working our way through a not too inspiring baguette, juice and coffee breakfast we stopped in at the visitor center before starting off, to find out about buses to SuperBesse (there are none, so we biked up). SuperBesse is a ski resort, 7 km to the west and uphill from town at the base of Puy de Sancy - at about 1,800 meters, one of the highest points in central France. When we arrived, almost nothing was open - but we did manage to purchase some bread, water and chocolate before beginning our hike - an 11 km loop to the summit and along surrounding ridges. A great hike.
