Bonjour Trieste
Day 54 - Aquileia to Trieste
The coast road into Trieste is pretty popular with cyclists, I think, we saw quite a few and there were some of those little signs with bikes on. There is some climbing, which is always popular with the lycra clad, but not too much, and it offers great views to the Adriatic from its snaking, cliff side perch.

It then descends to enter the city itself along a busy beach side promenade, with people eating and drinking in open air bars or sunbathing on rocks.
Days 55 and 56 - Trieste
Despite only meriting a couple of paragraphs in my lonely planet, Trieste is worth a visit (the thousands of tourists attest to this! Seems almost as busy as Venice). It's clearly been pretty wealthy over the years, with lots of wide streets, grand buildings, and expansive palazzos.
Unfortunately my allergies have been playing up again. No amount of antihistamines seem to block it entirely. If you haven't suffered personally, it might not sound too bad to have a sneezing, runny nose and itchy watery eyes - annoying but nothing serious. But to have them pretty much endlessly for hours at a time, and as the day goes on pollen seems to get deeper into your brain and lungs, blocking your eyes, tickling your lungs, even making you feel a bit sick... It wears pretty thin!
At least, I thought it was just allergies, but Sarah has a sore throat and a bit of a cough, and we are both feeling pretty sorry for ourselves. Also, she is waiting for a package from the UK, which we already missed once in France, so we are probably going to stay for another couple of days (Easter Sunday, and Monday is a holiday...) for that to arrive.
Today's ride: 50 km (31 miles)
Total: 2,294 km (1,425 miles)
