Day 7 - the Jennerberg and the Königsee

From time to time some person will think they’re funny (or maybe actually serious…) and will ask if my velomobile will float. No, no it does not. I just wanted to clarify this point so there are no misunderstandings about the activities of today.

I’ve been to Berchtesgaden/Schönau am Königsee. When I was last here, the Seilbahn (cable car) only went to the middle station rather than the top. I ended up hiking up to the top where there is a viewing platform looking down on the lake. Just as I got to the top, a thunderstorm moved in. I had to run back down to the closest guest house. About 10 minutes after I arrived there to shelter from the rain, lightning hit near the path I’d been on. Scary stuff. I never did get to see the lake from the top. I’ve always regretted that. My mission today was to fix that and memorialize it in photo. So, here it is:

You might have to zoom in, but the Königsee is down there

The Seilbahn trip up and down alone is worth it. Since I was last here, the whole Seilbahn has been replaced and upgraded. There are all new stations too and bottom, new restaurants, little tourist shops, etc. Very commercialized. On the one hand, it’s impressive that such an investment has been made. On the other, it’s sort of a shame that it’s not quite so rustic as it used to be. But alas, this is tourist land, and for obvious reasons. It’s really scenic.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is a little dicey. Pop-up thunderstorms are projected. The other thing I really wanted to do here is the boat ride on the Königsee to Salet and a bike back to Obersee and a view of the Röthbachfall. Since the Seilbahn accomplished the goal of epic views into the valley, there was not so much reason to spend all day hiking up there on the steep trails. The afternoon was instead spent with the boat ride (in a boat, no need to see if Velomobiles float). I’ve done the boat ride before too, but didn’t have enough time to stop at St Bartholomä or do the hike to the Obersee. At Bartholomä wasn’t very exciting, but the hike back to the Obersee was worth it.

All in all it was a very nice relaxing non-cycling day. No cycling is planned for tomorrow aside from some minor maintenance, but I do have an activity in mind. Be sure to check back in to see what I end up doing. After that it’s back to München for the second half of the trip. The return ride will not involve any gravel riding.
