We're On Our Way

It took two ferry rides and a nine hour flight but we have made it to Germany. Our friends on Saltspring Island, Kurt and Holly, gave us a ride to the ferry that goes to Vancouver Island and we were met on the other side by Mary Ellen's 94 year old mom and her sister. We stayed at Marilyn's house overnight and then took another ferry which takes us close to the Victoria airport.

Our good friends Kurt and Holly drove us down to the ferry.

As we came off the ferry from Saltspring Island I met this couple who were waiting for the ferry. They are from England and are on their honeymoon. They are riding a folding tandem bicycle. The bike folds up into the trailer that they pull. They are riding to San Franciso and then to Sri Lanka.

Our second ferry, Mill Bay to Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island. Mary Ellen's sister Marilyn is driving us in the blue SUV in the middle. Thanks Marilyn!

At the Victoria International Airport. Victoria is the "city of flowers".

Check in at the Victoria airport - so blissfully simple and fast. We flew from Victoria to Vancouver on Air Canada and then Vancouver to Frankfurt direct on Air Lufthansa.

We love flying out of Victoria as the line ups are short and security takes only about 5 minutes.  A 25 minute flight to the Vancouver airport, a two hour wait at the Vancouver airport and then an excellent flight on Lufthansa. We paid $100 more for extra legroom and it was sure worth it. Barry is  6'2" and even he could fully stretch out. We couldn't sleep, but at least we were comfortable.

The Vancouver Airport is a beautiful and user friendly airport

Through security and soon we'll be on our comfortable Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt - exciting!

The theme of this trip has happily been about simplicity and this continued in Frankfurt where we took the elevator down a few levels and took the super fast ICE train to Siegburg/Bonn where we will stay for a few nights.

We had an excellent flight to Frankfurt. Here a very tired Mary Ellen is waiting for the high speed train to Siegburg-Bonn. The airport and train station are in one building complex which is so convenient.

On Thursday we will be picked up by the people who have converted our tandem into an e-bike.

We wandered the streets of Siegburg until we found this wonderful German brewery/restaurant. We had our first beer of the trip and Barry had an excellent house made sausage dinner, all cooked in beer and mustard.
