Rest Day Six and Seven in Kathmandu: tourist alleys and bikes boxed
Sunday June 3rd
Kathmandu is an interesting place and makes a good base, though most of what we've seen is a 6 block square of "tourist alleys". There is on the surface multiple shops of goods, when in reality there is only a small selection of souvenirs, they all seem to sell the same things: meditation singing bowls, embroidered T-Shirts, pashmir scarves or shawls, bags/purses, same small variety of puppets. Patrick wasn't able to find the farmer/wife puppets he gave to Linda 13 years ago, now they are "Ganesh".
We walk to Jockhara square and temple. When away from the tourist area, the streets and shops become more real. Now there is an entrance fee to walk around the square. Patrick gets some pictures. Today there is another taxi strike...we are hoping this resolves and we don't have problems getting to the airport on Wednesday. We meet Graham Lewis for beer/dinner, a cyclist who was two weeks ahead of us.
Monday June 4th
Same same but different
Patrick finishes boxing the bikes on Saturday. We fly out to Amsterdam on Wednesday. This part of the trip is ending. Rachel has a few souvenirs: sheep leather purses, pashmir shawls, not enough to mail home, so will carry to USA and send home what is not given as presents and other gear we won't need anymore.
