Rest day in Malang: finding the bird market
We start the day in search of the bird market. Bird keeping is a long-standing tradition and pastime in Java that has spread beyond Indonesia. After circling it since our city map shows it on the wrong side of the river and there is no access from there, we end up in a maze of narrow alleys with all kinds of shacks with all kinds of birds. Patrick is most interested in the canaries, but we also see pigeons, orals and crows. The locals will catch anything and stick it in a cage and sell it. Even a baby monkey is available.
We also find the flower market, but this turns out to be more of a garden center with lots of potted plants. After a quick walk through we go to the internet cafe and visit some department stores for supplies. On the way into town yesterday we saw a KFC, so today we take a lemo back that way. Sorry to say there were no mashed potatoes or corn here.
