Lao Bao: Last day cycling in Vietnam
Today is the last cycling day in Vietnam. We are ready to leave and begin exploring Laos and finalize plans for riding in China and Tibet. The road is a gentle climb on Highway 9 and less traffic than Highway 1.
We are looking for a couple of hills used by the Marines during the "American" war. We think we see the one called the Rockpile. Near the Dakong bridge we take a break. The bridge spans the Dakong River and the road is part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Then the climb begins up to Khe Sanh. We decide not to go up to the combat base and continue onto Lao Bao.
The first hotel is closed, the next one is not friendly and is $20USD. We look on. A third hotel Rachel sees the side-by-side hand wave signal, indicating no and then a wave away. We cycle around, there is not much to the town, and we finally find the recommended Bao Son Hotel also closed.
So, we return to the only open hotel, we have to park our bikes outside with the motorcycles. After cleaning up, we go to the market and shop for supplies, and for dinner we go to the hotel restaurant. It is difficult to order but get a pho bo (beef).
