Impressions of Cambodia
Last impressions of Cambodia:
1. We entered Cambodia on the worst roads ever and left Cambodia on smooth asphalt and wide shoulder
2. Friendly people, Hello and Bye Bye shouted all along the way, honest in giving change ($)
3. Big black vases at the side of buildings to collect water
4. Face masks required on dusty roads
5. 4000 Riel to one dollar; most prices quoted in USD
6. Anything that crawls is deep fried: snakes, frogs, crickets, scorpions
7. Did the French teach Cambodians to eat escargot or the Cambodians teach the French to eat snails?
8. Cities with large boulevards and parks, one road going into Takeo lined with trees on both side of the road, legacy of the French as well as
9. Baguettes
10. Hotels/guesthouses ($7-20) with CNN partnerships and HBO on the RB, Fridge, individually wrapped toothbrushes and small (tiny, tiny)toothpaste tubes, and almost always Hot showers.
11. The hotel reception in Takeo asked Patrick if he spoke French or English and the transaction was done in French
12. Siem Reap temples: Cambodian Culture at its best
13. Khmer Rouge: Cambodian culture at its worst
14. Locals wearing rounded straw hats or checkered scarves wrapped around head and face
15. School kids on bikes riding to? From? school anytime of the day. Never figured out the school hours
16. Overloaded vehicles (trucks, wagons, motorbikes, oxen cart) except the Lexus and Landcruisers.
17. Either Lexus and Landcruisers (private vehicles) or wooden oxcarts or bicycles or catching rides---no middle class
18. Riding on the "right" side of the road
19. Landmines still being found
20. Batteries at the side of the road
21. No coins for money
