Day 93 - Kraton

I managed to shake a few lovers off with yesterday's blog, and so I'll make this one colourful to see if they come swarming back. It's a crude process getting to a comfortable number of lovers, a bit like interest rates and inflation.

Wikipedia seems to give a good definition of a kraton, with a touch of Javanese for the more learned among you - "Kraton or keraton (Javanese: ꦏꦿꦠꦺꦴꦤ꧀ orh ꦏꦼꦫꦠꦺꦴꦤ꧀) is a type of royal palace in Java, Indonesia. Its name is derived from the Javanese ka-ratu-an, meaning residence of the ratu, the traditional honorific title for a monarch."

The kraton in Yogyakarta, which is 250 years old, is perhaps the most famous and is a World Heritage Site. It's about two kilometres from where I am staying so I will take you on a journey.

Olan Olan to the north of the kraton. Much thought went into the design of the entire area. The nothingness here could almost be Japanese.

Daisy IrawanIt was covered by green green grass. Very cool and nice to hang around. Then, somebody ruined it in the name of going back to the ancient time, where it was a kind of gladiator arena. Tons of sand were taken from the beautiful south beach. Two places are ruined!

Ian WallisTo Daisy IrawanDaisy, again interesting. It had we somewhat perplexed. Grass seems so much better in this environment. Did they use dirt to deter people????

Sometimes you just have to tolerate discrimination!

I started my tour listening to a Gamelan orchestra. Here are some of their instruments.

Ian DouglasI attended a demo by the Canberra gamelan orchestra; very informative and will enhance my appreciation next time I’m in Indonesia.

There are other musical instruments on display at the kraton, including this cylindrical drum.

Smile and you might get a photo of a member of the orchestra.

The organisation and information at the kraton is exceptional. Gorgeous buildings, which house exquisite displays, enclose enchanting courtyards.

I'm going to skip the electric bike phase and get the Friday riders to cart me around and feed me egg and onion rolls in this palanquin

And then, finally at the kraton, the thing to do is go abstract.

I watched this horse do a 45 degree reverse park. A lot of people can't do that.

And, finally, the bicycle of the day.

Next time you're struggling to get that 2 L container of milk home on your fancy bike, just toughen up.

Ian DouglasThe seat tube looks suspiciously thick. Might hose a sneaky gas powered motor.
