The Canal de Bourgogne
Today we leave the Canal de Bourgogne A little bit about it. It is 240km long and has 189 locks linking the River Soane at St Jean de Losne with the Yonne at Migennes. Therefore linking the Rhone with the Seine It has the highest summit of any canal in France reaching 378m at Pouilly. What a massive and expensive enterprise it started in 1777 and it wasnt until 1833 that the first boat arrived in Dijon from Paris. It is a route worth riding.
To us it was particularly interesting as our good friends Rosemary and John have a beautiful old Dutch barge, Petronella, which they moor at St Jean de Losne so each European summer this canal has been their playground. We so enjoyed working out where they may have stopped along the way. I particularly wondered what it must have been like going through that long Pouilly tunnel - I dont think I would have enjoyed it
