Murcia and San Sebastián

Family time

It certainly feels a long time since we touched down in Alicante on the 7th May. We are of course not cycling yet so this is just a brief update on what has been happening in the meantime

One of the highlights while in Murcia was a trip to a small village near València.  This is in the middle of the rice growing area and we were there to go for lunch at the restaurant where Paella is said to have originated.  The lunch was delicious but I really enjoyed looking out the windows to see the cultivation of the rice.  At this time of the year the fields are flooded and they are beginning to plant out the new crop.  Ken naturally delighted to see the small tractor that was working in the fields.  He couldn’t get close enough to it to get a good look or take a photo of it but thought it rather resembled the Pasqualie he used to use in the vineyard

On Saturday was the really important occasion. It was the final game of the season for Matthew’s football team.  Matthew has been living in Spain since the beginning of 2021 playing football.  It has been an amazing experience for him, he is now fluent in Spanish (he is the only English speaker in the team). Wonderful for us to see him play in this unique setting.  They lost 2 to 1 but that didn’t matter we were delighted to be there and Matt full of smiles at the end

More wandering around the lovely old town, on a cart around the golf course,  eating tostada for breakfast and it was time to travel to San Sebastián.  It was like an army manoeuvre getting the five of us to the Alicanti Airport to fly to Bilbao then the bus to San Sebastián.  ‘The FamousFive’ were about to become ‘The Secret Seven’.  Jacob and his girlfriend Veronica are in Spain for a few weeks and were  joining us for 5 days.  Such a lovely family time. Here are a few photos of what we did

Ken hadn’t been feeling well we were so lucky to find Brian Recht ‘The American Doctor’. If ever you are ill in San Sebastián contact him you will be in very good hands
