Boxing the bike

This is the third time that I've packed a bike for a flight. And I think I've figured out a secret.

Get the biggest box possible!

Keith ClassenI am with you on the bike box selection. Bigger is better. I have used the same sturdy ebike box for 3 flights to and from Europe. Extra width allows space for gear with one pannier for carry on. Never had any issues . Looking forward to following along on your adventure.

Andrew RichardTo Keith ClassenThat's great! Where did you store it while travelling around Europe? On this trip I need to leave it and find another one at another city.

Keith ClassenOn our trips have been able to find a hotel willing to store the bike boxes until our return flight home out of the same airport. Our most recent trip was through Zurich where we booked a hotel near the airport.

I saved the box my bike shipped in from the factory but opted for an e-bike box. And I think that's the key. Ask specifically for an e-bike box. The box is 61 x 13 x 34" which means I only had to remove the handlebars, pedals and front tire. There's still a lot of work to try and protect everything and keep it from shifting all over the place but it was much easier than either previous job.

This is particularly exciting because on the other end I have much less assembly when I'll most certainly be exhausted from the flight.

I’m using a string to get back to the exact seat height. I also have marked the position with a sharpie but blue on black isn’t great.

Steve Miller/GrampiesTreat yourself to a silver coloured Sharpie. Works best on dark colours!

My plan is to head to the end of the Auckland airport dedicated for bike assembly. I hope I can get access to a bike stand and have it together in a couple hours and be headed out for supplies.

I packed the panniers with the pedal box and some other soft and light stuff to absorb any blows in shipping.

Of course, it's great to plan and there may be challenges I don't anticipate but this couldn't have been easier.
