Leutkirch - Marktoberdorf - Boy Oh Boy, Allgäu! - CycleBlaze

Leutkirch - Marktoberdorf

I am overjoyed to see that again in spite of predictions for rain it's going to be another dry and warm day. We leave Leutkirch without looking for sights of interest, if there were any. Once out of town we were confronted with two abrupt climbs of 10% and 13%, better than coffee to get you on your toes in the morning. Those little spikes on the elevation profile looked so inocuous. But I'm not complaining. My e-bike takes the sting out of the climbs and I am feeling great.

Out in the green green countryside

We are thankful for the bike paths that get us off the roads.

Today we encounter a series of not too serious construction sites. They are navigable and we don't have to turn back or detour, just work our way through.

Road under construction in Altusried, bumpy

Unfortunately the construction kept us from seeing the pretty streets in Altusried.

In spite of slower going, the best part of the day was an unpaved stretch.

The surface is good enough and doesn't ruin our enjoyment of the scenic surroundings.

Back on asphalt - not bad, either

Interior of the little chapel in the next picture - I am always surprised how ornate these little roadside chapels can be. I was also surprised that it was open. Most aren't.

Big field of this yellow flower, not sunflowers, but it must be a crop. I have no close-ups to help identify it.

Steve Miller/GrampiesI (Dodie) was thinking about this crop all day while pedalling and believe I now have it identified. Jerusalem Artichokes! Also known as Sun Chokes. A relative of sunflowers, but grown for their edible tubers. Sort of like a somewhat mealy potato. I have some that come up every year at home.

Suzanne GibsonTo Steve Miller/GrampiesThanks, Dodie! They look related to sunflowers but have no seeds, so I was wondering. I have seen them closer to home, too.

Janos KerteszStimmt!! Es ist Topimambur! Ungarisch hieß es "Csicsoka". Es war eine Futterpflanze, aber wir Kinder haben die Knollen manchmal gegessen. Es schmeckt bißchen wie Kohlrabi.

More road construction, but we could ride on the paved section that wasn't yet open for cars. The signposted detour for bikes looked rough and I am glad we didn't take it.
