Day 2 - Monguzzo to Palazzolo sull’Oglio
Ride at Your Own Risk
I did some further reading on the BI-12 bike route and found this from Komoot (as a side note, it generally way better to do this stuff before you’re committed to it):
The Pedemontana, also called the BI12, is a network of cycle paths. Much of this itinerary includes sections along dirt roads, making it ideal for gravel or MTB riders. The route unites cycle paths like the Valsugana, Adda, Lake Varese, Lake Comabbio and Via della Pietra.26 Nov 2024.

Very shortly into today’s ride K took particular note of the MTB reference. As it’s been said, a picture tells a thousand words so I’ve included a few pics to condense K’s comments.
We were also in this area 34 years ago as part of a week long tour we did from Zurich to Innsbruck via the Ticino region, this area, and then back over Brenner pass to Innsbruck (yeah, one week. We were in our 30’s, no kids, no brains, no money!). We even found an old pic of K at Sirmione (our destination for tomorrow) that we included in our 2019 journal 9 1/2 Weeks.
What we remembered of this particular section, i.e. from Lecco through to Brescia, was that it was quite built up and fairly industrial.
Not much has changed in 34 years.
So that was today. Another long one in the saddle as it takes an inordinate amount of time to navigate through the endless towns. We were freelancing for most of the afternoon avoiding the gravel/ dirt path sections of the BI-12.
We’re staying in another Agriturismo, Cà el Lubo. Nice place but a bit of a ghost town feel. It’s ‘modern’ in the sense you’re given a code to let yourself in, and other than that you’re on your own. There was a great restaurant just a few hundred metres away so we had a really good casual dinner last night of classic but updated Lombardy regional dishes
The weather was great, but there’s a huge rain event in the near term forecast (some forecasts show up to 60 mm of rain .. flooding could be an issue!)
So, remember at the very beginning of this journal where I gave thanks to all the other CB’ers whose paths we’re following, with the added note that we would be making some of our own fresh track that others may want to follow?
Well, don’t do today.
