Final meetup/final shuffle
We are both so pleased that we decided to stay in Portland an extra day after the Raven et Alia flew east because we need it. We’re really just down to sortin’ and storin’ and packin’, and it’s almost the only task left on the agenda; but it consumes most of the day.
First though I head over to Lovejoy bakery to chat a bit with my new best Ukrainian friend Kati, wish her a good year and tell her I hope to see her again next winter, and then settle in to work on the next post and wait for the final coffee date of the winter season. Bruce arrives promptly at 9, Kati places his order, and then we get down to it. There’s plenty to go over, especially knowing that in all likelihood we won’t see each other again for a full year.
When time comes to leave Kati pour a refill for the road and then we step outside and talk about the weather because for reasons Bruce would have to fill you in on he’s parked about a mile away and it’s pouring out. This is my ce to educate the street car, which he could hoooo on and ride to within a block of it.and since I won’t plan on hopping onto the streetcar or Max for the next year I leave him and Andrea the remaining balance on my Hop Card.
So he’s set to get back to the car, but first since he’s in the vicinity he braves the weather and makes his dash for Powell’s Books.

My plan for the morning is a trip to Keens to pick up some new sandals. I’ve decided to take all three - walkers, bike shoes and sandals - and then decide one quarter at a time which two to take and which one to leave behind with the suitcases. I’m replacing my open-toed ones though, which have brought me two sprained great toes in the last four years. Bruce tells me that Keens are closed-toe and the cyclists sandle of choice, so I’ll check it out. It’s lucky there is a Keens just six blocks from our apartment.

I find a pair I’m quite pleased with, and while I try them on I look at the soles of my walkers and see that they’re due for replacement too.

That done, it’s back to work. An hour later I’ve got another load set to go to storage, and one item to bring back: the handlebar bag I nearly forgot and left on the Rodriguez. I almost forgot it because it’s new and not on a checklist yet.
The weather is fair when I cross the street to the storage unit, but it’s pouring when I step back outside fifteen minutes later.

The rain passes soon enough and then I’m back at it, going over our belongings together with Rachael to make final decisions about what can stay behind and what we need to carry on the road with us for the next nine months to a year. Several interesting discussions ensue, especially over how many of our 20 charging cables and 17 current adaptors we really need with us.
At the end of the day nothing is left on the task list before departure but to make one last storage run, finalize packing, clean up and vacate the unit, take out the garbage, and schedule an Uber ride to the airport. Tomorrow will be a snap. We have to be out of the unit by 11 and our flight doesn’t depart until 3:30, so there’s no pressure. An abundance of time. I’ll make the final storage run in the morning, and we’ll be good to go. Too easy.
