Ceduna to Penong

Good introduction to the A1. Wide shoulder. This is the famous Eyre Highway. There’s about 1660 km of it. We’ll ride about 1200 km from here to Norseman.

Early lunch. I needed an energy boost in the windy conditions.

Yet another vast paddock without ground cover. Looks very vulnerable to wind erosion of topsoil.

Typical of today’s road scenery. Undulating and stretching to the horizon.

My mother was a cycle commuter in her younger years. Her gift of the book “The Overlanders” inspired me to do this “Against the Wind” ride. Happy Mothers Day.

Today, Mothers Day, was a good day to reflect that it was my 90 year old mother who (two years ago) inspired the idea of a TransOz Ride. It eventually morphed in this “Against the Wind” however it was my mother’s gift of a book “The Overlanders” by Rupert McGuiness which sparked the idea. I’m very fortunate to have the parents I do. Both are now 90 years old. Both were excellent role models for me and I credit them with my love of the outdoors and physical activity.

Today was another strong wind day, but in lieu of a rest day, we did a shorter ride of 74km which brought us to the hamlet of Penong.

This centre was in Ceduna. A good reminder we are cycling on Aboriginal country.
