A little about transportation. So far we have walked and taken public transportation. The Airport to center city of Madrid on bus 203. Sorolla Museum underground rail (subway). To the train station, subway. To Burgos, high speed train. From train station in Burgos to the old city and hotel bus(note you must have euros in coins, 1.20 each. To get tickets in Madrid at the subway stations there are machines which fortunately have an English language option. Maps were very clear and which exit to take was well marked.
The only exception was Charmartian subway station which was at least 3 stories high. It took us a few minutes to believe we really had to keep going up. Then a short walk to the train station for our ride to Burgos. We just followed the crowd. Below we start in Madrid.
One of the things I loved about the center area of Madrid was the scale. Buildings were often only six or seven stories high. Curved fronts on corners opened up space.
A couple of blocks from the hotel there was a neighborhood called Las Letras with narrow streets, lots of Tapas bars, restaurants and stores at street level.
The cathedral is massive. With large chapel after large chapel surrounding the main sanctuary. The organ’s pipes faced both into the corridor surrounding the main sanctuary and the sanctuary itself.
