Essential item

Items that must always be on your person or in your object bag (pannier, suitcase, rucksack, handlebar bag, etc) when you step out the door.  They should be kept in a separate zip lock bag, both so that they’re easy to move from one carrying device to another and so you don’t need to keep rechecking to make sure you’ve got them with you this time.

Depending on context, they may include:

  • Flashlight
  • Helmet
  • Outer layer
  • Bike gloves
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency snacks
  • Pain reliever
  • Electrolytes
  • Keys
  • Wallet
  • Phone
  • Garmin
  • Varia light.

Depending on context (walk vs bike, etc), they may also include:

  • Easily accessible items (phone, glasses case, Garmin, Varia light, outer layers, long pants)
  • Helmet, gloves and bike lock
  • Camera (GoPro/Canon), backup memory and battery
  • Red hat, walking stick, hand brace

CJ HornA would add a laminated card that shows who to call, if you are found needing help.

Scott AndersonTo CJ HornThat’s the right idea alrepight. I’m going to get an ID wrist band though, one that also includes emergency medical information - like the fact that I’m on blood thinner that requires an antidote in a bleeding emergency.
