Phon Phisai - The sixteenth step ... From Bác Hồ to กรุงเทพมหานคร - CycleBlaze

Phon Phisai

We made sure we didn't leave town without food this morning.   In contrast to yesterday we had no problem finding food.  BBQ chicken, rice and pa tong go.  All this on top of half a small watermelon we enjoyed as first breakfast back at our digs.

The ride itself was pretty boring.   We tried to escape the 212 but gave up after fighting soft sand and corrugations.

Fifteen kilometers from Phon Phisai we came upon what is called the International Buddhist Park at Wat Phra Dhammakaya. A bit too gaudy a lotus for me.

I'm not sure why but Phon Phisai's Lent celebrations end a week later than further down river.  On arrival in Phon Phisai it immediately became clear that the final day of their celebrations was in full swing.  The riverfront was jam packed with people and food stalls.  Loudspeakers were blaring out announcements and music from various oversized sound systems competed with each other.  We found a restaurant along the river to enjoy some lunch and wait for the next boat race to start

Thd next challenge was to find some accommodation.  After an  initial failure at a really large hotel (logic suggested they would more likely have free rooms than a smaller establishment) we found a room at a value for money, old style Thai 24 hour resort on the outskirts of town.  Perfectly clean with reasonably good linen (a rarity in Thailand) and the best shower we have had for a while.  Unfortunately the bed itself has worked hard to earn its keep, if you get my drift, and is no longer in the best of condition.

We headed back down to the river late in the afternoon to catch more of the festivities and enjoy a beer as the sun set.  The last of the boat races was taking place and a big section of the riverfront seemed to be gearing up for one final fling.  It would have been a bit too late for us and our age might have been an issue so we found a quiet spot on the periphery for our sundowners.

The last boat race gets underway with the sun just about to set.

We head for Nong Khai tomorrow.   Accommodation is already booked so we don't have to stress with this being the last weekend of the holiday season.

Today's ride: 56 km (35 miles)
Total: 1,440 km (894 miles)
