Day 11 - Rüdesheim to St Goar (Germany)

Castle Hunting on the Middle Rhine

We took a chairlift up to the Niederwald monument then hiked a mile and a half back down the hill into town

One of the odd things we've noticed on our trip so far is aside from the occasional heron, swans and ducks, we're not seeing any of the typical critters you'd see popping up near us in the states... foxes, ground hogs and deer. Well I think we just discovered why... Apparently these guys hunted them all down and hung them on their wall here.

Another intersection in Bacharach. We were hoping to spend the night in Stahleck castle in this town, (which you can see on the hilltop to Ellen's right), but with our flexible schedule, we didn't want to make many reservations in advance. So by the time we were comfortable we could spend Thursday night in Bacharach, it was already completely booked. So we headed further up the river and stayed at St Goar

It had been a gorgeous weather day for us... temps in the mid 70s w a slight breeze until about 20 minutes before our final destination when we suddenly got pummeled with a surprise shower
