Day 10 - Karlsruhe to Rüdesheim (Germany)

Train Ride, Short Bike Ride and Date Night

We only had three days left in our trip and wanted spend some quality time riding along the Middle Rhine section of the EV15. So we decided to take another train hop from Karlsruhe to Mainz this morning and then pedaled from Mainz to Rüdesheim am Rhein

We've ridden a couple of train station elevators these past 2 weeks and we barely fit in with both our bikes and gear. But we still feel fortunate to ride them because some stations don't have any elevators and you have to carry your bikes and gear up the steps.

Rüdesheim is known for their Rüdesheim Coffees with whipped cream and brandy. So the first thing we did as we pulled into town was order one of these coffees to keep Ellen juiced up for the rest of the afternoon.

The streets in Rüdesheim looked beautiful in the evening. According to a guide book we're using, this town is the second most popular destination in Germany for foreign tourists (after the Koln Cathedral).

Ellen was trying to get her hands on some eiswein (or ice wine) which apparently Rüdesheim is well known for. It's wine made from grapes harvested after the first frost.

We checked out a local wine merchant and he convinced her that eiswein is too sweet and he got her to try another dessert wine instead. Ellen loved it and asked "So can I just get a glass of that to go?".
He said "Sure"
"And can I just walk out of here and drink it in the street?"
"Of course... This is GERMANY!"

and away she went

We walked by a cute little drinking area that looked like they were closing their doors, but we heard music so we snuck in and this guy was singing Western folk and pop tunes with a guitar.

It was perfect

Right after we walked in and sat down he asked us if we had any requests. I said "Paul Simon" and he played "Sound of Silence" for us.

Finally got to hear some guitar music... I was starting to go through withdrawal

We started talking and I told him I played banjo in couple bluegrass bands in Baltimore MD and a little guitar once in a while. So he handed me the guitar and said "Here... play something".

So I played Wagon Wheel and another tune and that was good enough to cover our drink tab for the evening
