The Gear Preparation

"the list" same same but different

Our Mountain Hardwear Tent we used in 1999-2000 in South America and 2006-07 Asia and cycling home from the Arctic Circle. Testing to see if still waterproof and needed to fix one zipper.

Patrick fixing an insert for his camera gear to be carried like a handlebar bag. That will be the big yellow bag on the front of his bike.

Jacquie GaudetTo Rachel and Patrick HugensSame here. I got a little Panasonic super zoom for touring but after someone asked me to take a photo of them with their DSLR, I decided I needed to start bringing mine. So much nicer to use! My husband thinks his phone is just fine and I should be thankful. Before the phone, he never took pictures at all (so I’m not in any family photos).

George Kemp, Ascension Custom Bicycles, fixed a small crack in Patrick's frame. George has also built our wheels for past tours. Thanks George!

Kelly IniguezYou found the frame damage before leaving on tour? How fortunate! How was it discovered? Have you always used 48 spoke wheels? Once upon a time, for an Alaska tour, I had 48 spoke wheels, but the next set I bought had 36 and those have been robust enough. Crossing fingers.

Rachel and Patrick HugensHi Kelly, yes by Patrick putting some white paint where he noticed the crack on the other side of the frame. When we got to Winthrop he noticed the other side needed fixing as well. Fortunately, we were at a spot and WS host that knew a frame builder and we got it fixed again....since 1992 and many tours that was the first break of the frame, and we completed the NT and the Morocco to Holland tour with no problem. Hopefully our Scandinavia and Baltic tour the bikes will still be fine. https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/racpatnortherntier2021/day-6-rest-day-in-winthrop/

Rachel and Patrick HugensTo Kelly IniguezAnd 48 spokes might be overkill now with our tours changing, but it is a relief to minimize the chance of broken spokes.

As gear on "the list" is collected and placed in the box, and then it is marked off the list.
