Day 129: Kennebunk to Portsmouth NH
Back into New Hampshire for a day
“That gear looks old,” says one from the group of four bike packers. “These panniers have been around the world,” Patrick says: “we used these bags on our 2015-2017 RTW tour and they are well worn”. “And then you bought them?” what a great comeback, these New Englanders are quick.
Today we leave Maine and have one more day in New Hampshire. We are in no hurry this morning. Jay fixes us breakfast, we visit more, and Frosene works on fixing her back wheel flat tire. She rode coast to coast, Portland to Portland without a flat tire. We set off later than planned.
Our route is mostly following the East Coast Green Way. The roads it follows have light traffic and are mostly through forests. The trees are showing nice colors. There are a couple of climbs, but the country is flattening out.
We stop in Kittery at a local shop for a snack and chocolate milk before the final miles into Portsmouth. On the bridge into downtown, Patrick texts our Warmshowers host where we are and gets a response that Jeff is on a bike ride and 15 minutes away. We plan to find a brewpub and meet up. As we stop at one place that has a 20 minute wait, Jeff arrives and says “you’ve picked the least local place” and shows us to another place. After enjoying a beer, he leads us to his house and we meet his wife Christine. He sets up his pop up camper for us to sleep in, saving us tomorrow packing up a wet tent.
A fun evening, and great dinner of lasagna and bread. They are Irish Italian. Jeff spent many years flying as a navigator on B-52 bombers. He has many good stories.
