Day 109: Norridgewock to Carmel
New England Staples: Dunkin' Donuts and Subway
“Should we stop at Dunkin Donuts”? Patrick asks at about 10:00 in Canaan. No need for “second breakfast” today because we started out with a big breakfast, but we stop for a break. Ann fixes us a nice breakfast of scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, muffins and coffee.
We are on US 2, making progress, and the weather is perfect for cycling. Sometimes the shoulder is pretty broken up. As Rachel is climbing a hill, a guy in a truck tosses out a lit cigarette just as they passed. Wonder if this is the Maine equivalent to Western Truck coal rolling cyclists. There are glimpses of color in the hillside, but we are too early for the full effect of fall. The upside for Rachel, it’s not cold enough yet for the leaves to turn.
After Canaan, the shoulder improved. About 7 miles past, we turn off onto Phillips Corner Road that takes us to Pittsfield. We stop at a Subway for lunch. Today we hit both staples in New England: Dunkin Donuts and Subway. From Pittsfield, we take Hwy 69 a great suggestion by our Warmshowers host as the road follows the river valley for awhile. The road doesn’t have much of a shoulder and in spots pretty hilly, but there is very light traffic.
Our hosts for tonight live nearby Carmel, in a beautiful house next to a pond in the forest. Kim welcomes us in with cheese and salami; later after her husband Jim comes home we share a great dinner.
