Not sure how to titled today’s post … originally it should have been The Trail of the Couer d’Alenes II but maybe it really should have been the Trail of the What If?
We started in Kellogg, ID with the intent of doing a normal ride, 3o miles give or take following our normal pattern. But after finishing the first 15 miles, the trail was simply too good to turn around so we decided, just go another 5 miles and we can then turn it into a 40 mile ride.
At the turn-around, we then started talking about making today’s ride a birthday ride. A ride where you cycle your age on your next birthday. Given that tomorrow is the PedalPushin Wife’s 62 birthday we then also figured out that maybe it should be my birthday ride as well. My birthday isn’t until October and I will be 63 and it typically too cold to do a birthday ride outside in Alaska. So on we continued until we then realized that we would be turning around a little short of where we cycled to yesterday and the thought of leaving a small segment undone … I think you get what happened now. We finally turned around at the 33 mile mark, setting up our birthday rides and leaving no segment undone.
The ride was, once again, quite superb although this end of the trail did see some root pushups, something we didn’t experience yesterday. All the other trail users were quite appropriate and we even found a “water station” where someone had put out a cooler of water so that folks could keep hydrated. We did make use of that cooler on the return run as we didn’t take enough fluids with us back when it was going to be a normal 30 mile ride.
In the end, we hit the 66.3 mile mark and accomplished all of our developed goals throughout the day.
We found a nice mom and pop diner for dinner and even enjoyed the refreshement of a hot tub.
Today's ride: 66 miles (106 km)
Total: 7,977 miles (12,838 km)
