Sep 18 - The Centennial Trail

Today we headed to a Hall of Fame trail, one we have read about for quite some time.
The Centennial Trail is a 31 mile trail running from Snohomish to the Nakashima Barn in Washington. The trail is almost all 12-14 feet wide with smooth pavement and obvious upkeep. We rode from Sonomish to Arlington and then returned to our van for a 43 mile ride. Tomorrow we will ride the missing part to complete the entire trail.
Along the way we encountered a few trail users but not nearly as many as I would have anticipated. We did see 2 recumbent trikes and stopped to speak to one of those riders. He is a local somewhere near and mentioned he rarely sees trikes so we exchanged some information and passed along some ideas for to winter in Tucson.
As for the riding, quiet and serene, although there were quite a few “road” crossings which were mainly driveways coming up from the valley floor. There was 800 ft of climbing but given this is an old railroad bed, it really meant a one gear change type of day.
In Arlington, we found yet another quaint, 50’s styled burger and grill operation. Nutty’s Junk Yard Grill was quite the lunch stop. The grill is located in an old gas station and is decorated with memorabilia from the 50’s. It was fun to see an old gas pump that I remember from growing up where you had to hand pump gas into a glass container which then gravity fed into your tank.
The ride back was equally nice although the now tailwind scooted us along a bit faster than the ride out.
Today's ride: 43 miles (69 km)
Total: 7,822 miles (12,588 km)
