Today we continued heading west towards the ocean but first we needed to get some miles in. Our first target today was the Sun Lava Trail which leads into the Sun River Bikeways.
The trail was simply superb as it wound its way through pine and fir forests across Forest Service land. Once we reached the end of the Sun Lava Trail it merged into the bikeways that surround and criss cross the Sun River area. Sun River is basically a planned community that apparently swells to 25,000 people in the summer but this time a year is much, much smaller. As part of the community plan, a walkway / bikeway circles the area with other trails connecting various neighborhoods within the community. We found a wide, smooth trail that went by expensive houses and very, very few people.
After circling the area, we met back up with the Sun Lava Trail for the return.
Back in the van, we then set our sights on a trail that circled Diamond Lake on the road towards Medford.
The John Dellenback Trail is an 11.0 loop trail that follows the shores of Diamond Lake. What we found was a path that went through campgrounds and Douglas fir forests that sometimes was next to the lake and sometimes not. The path varied quite a bit from a wide trail to a trail barely wide enough for our trikes. The ride was slow but the views were spectacular despite the smoke that was hanging in the air. We saw only less than a handful of people and throughly enjoyed the loop.
After getting back to the van, it was a 1 1/2 hour drive to Medford in the dark along a winding road. I don’t really like ending the day driving in the dark but today’s rides were certainly worth it.
