After 3 days in Leuven, Day 15 - We cycle to Hasselt

Go east old man go east!

How does Erika's brother Peter fit into this?  Well we certainly want to see him and his family while we are here in Europe and his birthday is on next Saturday, July 14th, so that gives us about the right amount of time to cycle there (near Frankfurt).  So with that in mind, every time I looked at my GPS today, it told me I was going East.

Well you can see it was mostly east. The first few km the GPS was acting up and the actual route didn't get recorded

We passed this park on the way out of Leuven. It seemed to be a summer camp for children and they were using shipping pallets to do some creative building. The children looked like they were having a great time.

More pallet creativity.

Leuven seems to be a fairly devout Roman Catholic area. We passed may homes with small religious shrine.

The path Marvin mapped out took us through several small towns. While there were not always separate cycle paths, the road were always marked as shared and we found the traffic was quite respectful of the space we needed to be safe.

We had quite a discussion during the ride about what color brick we liked the best. I think this was the winner. Also, througout both the Netherlands and Belgium we have seen quite a few homes with solar panels.

A typical road for today. This seems to be a very agricultural area and they seem to use a lot of natural fertilizer (quite the smell)..

We passed quite a few feels of ripe wheat. This field was one of the few that had already been harvested.

Ivy sure enjoys having brick to climb up. It will need to be cleaned off to keep the integrity of the brick.

Another pretty brick house.

We really love the smooth paths that wind through tress and fields.

Ripe wheat to the left and a cyclist passing by.

Many of the houses in the area have the side covered with square tiles that are nailed in a fish scale like pattern. The colors can vary but most look very nice. I am guessing they are less expensive that having brick all around the home.

Many orchards in the area. Mainly apples and pears.
Heart 0 Comment 0
Another cute farming town.

This was the most typical type of dedicated cycle path we rode on today.

In Canada cemeteries are usually grassy areas with grave markers that are flat to the ground so that lawn mowers can drive over the area easily. We quite enjoy looking at the headstones and beautifully kept cemeteries we seen surrounding churches in Europe.

Even the smallest of towns seems to have an impressive brick church with a town square. In most of the towns the spire stands out high above the rest of the town.

When the bike trail ends we cycle on small country roads. There was little traffic tonight. Probably because people were getting ready to watch the Belgium/Brazil FIFA match.

In the Netherlands many of the lovely brick houses have thatched roofs. In Belgium we have not see much thatching but lots of very nice tile shingles.

To many brick houses???

Last week the corn fields we passed were just getting started and were about 2 feet high. This week the fields we are passing are much higher in growth. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell the difference between sweet corn and feed corn?

Lawn status are quite common on this route. This house is being protected by a couple of guard dogs. Not very scary!

Two examples of the types of statues in front of many of the homes in this area. I really liked the one with the two children on the bench.

We have know idea what this sign was to tell us but I did like the look of it so Marvin humored me and took the picture.

The tiles on the side of this house were pale grey. They are kept in place with nails and at the lower point you can see how the nail keeps the tile supported.

Crops!

Many homes are displaying national pride as Belgium does well in the World Cup.

Beautiful farming vistas.

Many of the side roads are paved with cement slabs. If you get one that is new, they can be quite smooth but most of the older ones provide a good bump to go over about every 15-30 feet.

More well kept orchards.
Heart 0 Comment 0
Green pears. As we entered one town there was a sign that indicated that anyone picking fruit from an orchard would be fined 500 Euros.
Heart 0 Comment 0
Green apples.I took these pics to show how thick the fruit has grown this year

This farm advertised their crops with a giant apple and strawberry on their front lawn.

This house was shut up tight with the very awesome roller blinds they have in Europe but they were still announcing their national pride.

They must still get mail delivery here. Many of the homes had really cute mail boxes.
Heart 0 Comment 0
Another interesting mail box.
Heart 0 Comment 0
We found some nice ripe sour cherries next to the path. Sour cherries are often used in the preparation of meat, especially wild boar.
Heart 0 Comment 0
This was my favorite mail box.
Heart 1 Comment 0
Several of the farms had their own small chapels. This is a fairly modern one.
Heart 1 Comment 0
Nice red mail box. Classic!
Heart 1 Comment 0
Typical of the tidy little towns we rode through.

We stopped for a drink of water and juice here at Sint-Andreaskerk, Loksbergen

So we called it the Bench of the day

Sometimes it looks to us like we are riding on the sidewalk. But then you see intersections marked unquestionably for bikes

The owner on the right and another customer on the left. The cherries were perfect sweet black ones that were left with an honor box. We bought 2 baskets

The light was bad for this picture or you could see how loaded his trees are

The owner took a pic of us

It looks like they build the brick over a frame house with regular brick covered by decorative brick

This was unusual. Some kind of tile roof

Tree lined streets now that we have entered Hasselt

We follow a main highway for a short distance to get over the freeway and into the city centre. Notice the bullards set to protect us

Our room at the Hostel H is very large and spacious, even if spartan. Price was 62 euros.

Our bikes are locked away in a cage behind the building and after getting things set up, I went down to the lounge and watched Belgium beat Brazil.

Tomorrow we will head to Aachen, Germany through Maastricht, Netherlands.

For those of you following us day by day, yesterday I completed  Day 5, Day 6 and Day 7 with pictures and captions.  If you haven't read them yet be sure and go back.

Today's ride: 52 km (32 miles)
Total: 571 km (355 miles)
