We awoke to continuing rain…the typhoon is not quite behind us. However, magically midday, the sun appeared and we enjoyed a beautiful rest of the day. It felt good to get out and walk around our neighbourhood. We are intrigued by the accuracy of Japanese weather forecasting. We will receive a message from NHK, their national broadcaster, and to the minute they’ll send forecast that there will be more rain in 21 minutes and it will end at a specific time. And the crazy thing is that it is accurate.
This is the first we have been able to see the hills of this area and sunny skies for a few days.
If you are shopping and your hands are full carrying a purse, a child….no matter, just hook your arm through the handle and you can access the cooler/freezer.

We have met workers at our hotel who are from Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. There seems to be a large contingent of people here from other parts of Asia. Otake is oriented to heavy industry with companies producing petroleum, pulp and paper and chemical fibers. The city has little flat land suitable for agriculture. The following photos are the view we can see of the industrial area along the coast behind the hotel.
Our impromptu decision to stay in Otake for 3 nights was a good one. We were lucky to secure a room at the last moment as hotels had quickly sold out with the forecast of the typhoon. The Sun Hotel was completely full. We enjoyed using the onsen everyday, spending time in the hotel’s public spaces with free beverages and just watching the storm raging outside, reading and relaxing. Nonetheless, we are very ready to resume our travels and hitting the road tomorrow morning.
