The East Fjords

Faskrudsfjordur

Started at 8.30 this morning when it was away too foggy. At times visibility was less than 100 metres and the damp made it chilly.  At 11 the fog started to thin and the sun started to break through upon the road around Faskrudsfjordur. One moment it is foggy, then towering mountains appear out of the mist across the narrow fjord. Shortly after passing through the village of Faskrudsfjordur, I hear a click as I stomp up a steep hill. Shortly I discover while looking down between the chain stays that my rear wheel is well out of true and stopping to look, see that a drive-side spoke is broken. Well, I thought, at least I've got 31 spokes left and hoped I can continue with my plan. I was hoping it would carry me and not deteriorate to a state where I would have to get a lift or walk.

I continued on out to the coast and turning a corner to cycle parallel to the shore I was met by a strong crosswind and fog rolling in off the sea. I stagger on for 18 km more to stop for a late lunch outside a village shop in a little place called Breidadalsvik. When I set off again the bike with the out-of-true wheel was feeling a lot easier to ride refreshed from the stop and on the way on the wind was mainly on my back. I made the remaining 24 km to my planned destination for the day Berumes, across the fjord from a pyramid like mountain that rises above the fishing village Djupivogur. Though, due to fog, there wasn't much of a view this afternoon.
