It’s time for a ride. - Several good blokes tackle Melbourne to Bungendore. - CycleBlaze

It’s time for a ride.

Melbourne to Bungendore.

It’s time for another ride. This time Pete and I are flying to Melbourne on Thursday and riding a circuitous route back to our home town of Bungendore. We’ll head west from Melbourne airport to Ballarat and then on to Bendigo. From there it’s an eastward trajectory to Shepparton and then Wangaratta where we’ll jump on the ‘Murray to the Mountains’ rail trail. That will lead us into my favourite cycling region in Australia; north eastern Victoria. With quiet roads, magnificent rivers and pristine wilderness it’s a cycling Mecca.

The trail will take us to Beechworth and Yackendandah and into the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. Continuing east we’ll pass through some classic Victorian country towns like Tallangatta and Corryong before crossing the mighty Murray and heading north to Tumbarumba, Batlow and Tumut. From there it’s up and over the Brindabellas to Wee Jasper, across the less mighty but still alliterative Murrumbidgee to Murrumbateman and finally Bungendore.

Along the way we’ll have several friends join us for parts of this thousand odd kilometre trek. There will be cool crisp mornings, hopefully sunny skies and spectacular Autumnal  colours.

Graham SmithIt’s great to see Bungendore featuring on the international stage of cycle touring.

It deserves to be up there in the pantheon of great human settlements along with Melbourne.
