A day of transition

Bendigo to Green Lake

We had a decent Thai meal last night and slept soundly, content in the knowledge that I won a three way rock scissors paper challenge to have first pick of the beds. My poor form throughout 2024 seems to be a thing of the past.

I found a coffee shop around the corner whilst Pete and John faffed around for ages. I was on to my second cappuccino when they arrived; turns out Pete’s tyre went flat overnight.

Dinner with Simon Judy and Matt.

Pete getting some tips and inspiration from the Paris Roubaix one day classic that was on last night.

We rode out of Bendigo on another fabulous bike path that took us out of town with minimal effort. It was then on to a busy secondary road that we had to take as the only alternative was the Midlands highway.

Cycling through Bendigo.

I’m not the only one that gets lost.

After enduring 15 kilometres into the wind and way too many trucks for our liking we diverted off our route onto a dirt road to get to a google recommended bakery at Goornong. We rode into this god forsaken town wondering how a place like this could support anything let alone an award winning bakery. As it turns out google got it wrong so  we sat outside the closed pub and ate our emergency mars bars.

With 15 kilometres left to Elmore, where the bakery really was, we opted for the main highway as it had a decent verge and battled a headwind and noisy trucks all the way in.  The bakery lived up to its name, we scoffed some pies for lunch and took extra apple cakes for desert tonight.

A classic example of a Victorian ‘chair fence’ a common sight during the depression when fencing materials were scarce.

Thankfully we turned onto quiet roads not far out of Elmore and hardly saw a car for the rest of the day.

Today was very much a transition day, necessary but not particularly enjoyable although our endpoint at Green Lake was much better than I expected. It’s an irrigation lake with camping along one side and basic facilities that’s already starting to fill up for Easter.

It’s flat, dry and dusty in Central Victoria.

Dinner is gnocchi in a tomato and basil sauce with fresh beans and zucchini which certainly hit the spot after a big day.

Today's ride: 80 km (50 miles)
Total: 361 km (224 miles)
